Candy Candy first appeared as the prose a novel by Japanese writer Kyoko Mizuki in April 1975. Mizuki then worked with an illustrator to create a manga version of Yumiko Igarashi Candy Candy manga stories. This manga's story attracted the attention of Japan Nakayoshi magazine, which then contains the Candy Candy manga series as the serialized story over four years (April 1975 - March 1979). This manga series has also won first prize in the category of Kodansha Manga Award in 1977 shōjo. Candy candy story later adapted into an anime series by Toei Animation.
