Aliens have replaced the Americans who forcibly opened Japan to the outside world in the 1850s, creating an odd blend of widely-disparate settings in this popular and long-running gag series. While it can be entertaining for veteran anime fans, its intensive use of parody and topical humor limit its accessibility.
